CHERNOBYL PRAYER (CHERNOBYLSKAYA MOLITVA)

A chronicle of the future

Twenty years ago, on April 26th 1986, an explosion took place at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant that had an irreversible effect on the entire world.

This production is based upon Svetlana Alexievich’s book, Chernobyl Prayer: Chronicle of the Future, published in 1997 and reissued numerous times, becoming a bestseller in many countries throughout the world.  The book is based upon documentary material gathered by the authour, upon monologues delivered by eye-witnesses, from which a literary oratorio arises, addressing the overlooked and unintelligible story of the world after Chernobyl, for which mankind was not prepared.

Joel Lehtonen, the director of this production, would like to use the performance as a way to draw attention to the fear of an entire generation, using theatre to address the questions and problems of the modern world which have either been forgotten or simply ignored.

This production is intended to pay tribute to all emergency response workers, eye-witnesses and victims of disasters, and to remind generations of people from all over the world about what has happened.
