Krum, the main hero of Hanoch Levin’s play, returns to his paternal home after a long absence, where he is awaited by his mother, friends and acquaintances. But the world which Krum had pictured for himself while abroad turns out to be completely different, literally paralysed and apathetic. It is as if the reality to which Krum wants to return has forgotten to move forward in line with his dreams, forgotten to develop, to fill itself with events. The characters’ actions are chaotic and pointless, and life pulses forward merely from occurrence to occurrence, responding only to the formal rhythm of births, weddings and funerals. But among this company, Krum appears to be the most passive. Somebody else gets married, somebody else dies, somebody else wants to leave. Like a distant spectator who has lost his very self and come to reside in a world of illusions, Krum looks on at life as at a dream or a theatrical performance, consisting of his own fantasies and fears.
