Nikolai Gogol

THE OVERCOAT (SHINEL)

A joint production between The Meyerhold Centre and the Sovremennik Theatre

“Fokin found a concise and voluminous metaphor: his overcoat is the world, without which, every living thing will perish.  Within the performance’s sixty minutes, Marina Neelova played everything possible: the quiet happiness of a comfortable existence, the realization of her overcoat-home’s decrepitude, horror at the necessity of constructing a new one, poverty, and love.  And she played love of the truest sort: from the first awkward caresses of a new overcoat’s luxurious cloth, to coquettish caprices and a tender falling into its wide embrace.”
